Eighth of the ETMK IDEA conversations realized with Sultan Kaygın Sel, industrial designer who turned her direction to the user experience area, under the moderatorship of Dr. Can Özcan. The designer who maintains academic and professional life within balance, continues her studies as Vestel Electronic User Experience and Interface Design Group Manager and recommends young designer to labour for developing their problem-solving abilities to highest level throughout their education lives. Following this article in which we give a short section of the conversation you can watch the video in the ETMK YouTube account for the sharing in which the designer mentioned participation subjects as design and team in the process.

Can Özcan: What do you say in the meaning of past, today and future for the industrial design occupation area described as the occupation of the future? Did its future arrive? Are we living that future within today?

Sultan Kaygın Sel: When we look at our own life experience, for example from telephone sample. A phone line was first get connected through switchboard, later it came into house, later mobile phones appeared and everybody did not have it during my university time. Today, when we asked to our university student friends, not-being possibility cannot be thought. Every term had their different necessity description, in my opinion there is time to describe it as an occupation of the future. I started by professional life as to make product design, after ergonomy drew my attention, later user experience became one of the important areas for me. Those that were not our subject at all before, digital displays, interrelations of the products began to be subjects required to be thought for the design of the products. When we were students there was ergonomy, its name as user experience was not given. Also, technological developments open design area to us, for example Artificial Intelligence (AI) is within everything.

Can Özcan: The future has come, maybe it didn’t come as being known by us or not in a way taught to us but it came with an infrastructure to which we can be adapted. Also, the youth who are audience today here required to think across the world. It is an obligation for those who selected this occupation to adapt themselves to these changes. It is important to be able to say; “maybe I can make it again with new tools after a few years”.

Sultan Kaygın Sel: The students must develop their problem-solving skills as much as possible within these four years they receive education so as they can be able choose to work whether in the furniture area, or electronic area or user experience or in the user interaction area. As many as he/she develop his/her problem-solving skill, later it is easier to progress in the area he/she wishes. We cannot know everything module by module during the student life, it is important to be graduate dominant to this talent. Those friends who make this and whose analytical thinking skill is good will advance easily when they graduated as much as they labour in the area they wish. Also, while the education life continuing, they must not neglect to increase their knowledge belonging to the subject of their field of interest. We can reach to every information online, there are seminars, conferences. By reading from various resources, they must participate into the workshops later, try to increase his/her skill belonging to the area he/she want to specialize and establish a network. When I was a student, I made investment in these subjects and when he/she says this area drew my attention deepening voyage must start. Research and analysis skill is very important for the designer whatever the area to be selected by us.

Can Özcan: Perpetual improve oneself is a requirement of this occupation. As sultan, you lead both an active and productive life. You advanced by experiencing this balancedly. In the industry academy relationship, in our education periods, 30 years before this there was lack of compliance. Design did not find its value in industry, I comment as it is not so today, but again I want to ask you, because you both saw the education world and professional world. Did the education take the required steps, did professional area approach this design issue? Did it become as being able to give the value deserved, or did not?

Sultan Kaygın Sel: There is a serious difference between the time we first enrolled school and today. Also the similar case is valid for the industrial design or subsequent user experience design or to design environmentally-conscious, sustainability concept. Companies want to include this in their products and processes compulsorily, however when this became compulsory. In short, when the rivalry become in a way that cannot be made with other things.

The companies were conveying their request to the institution where I work with more technical features. They were saying I want a TV in such dimension and want w million pieces, they were trying to learn delivery time, which technology and budget. When the access to technology of everybody became similar after a certain time and the end user started comment its relationship with its place when purchasing TV, the producing institutions and decision makers started asking to us designers what can we present as industrial design. In short, when the design became a factor creating a questioned difference by the user, also the institution that make the production became an institution that adapting the design as an added-value.
